Warisan Penjelajah (transl. Explorer’s Legacy) is my final-year university project that designed to help Indonesian Chinese young adults learn about their heritage through a board game.
For the visual direction, I used photo collages created from photographs I took during my travels as the hero image. Then, paired these with serif typeface and traditional Chinese colours to add a ‘classical’ visual experience. Together, these elements distinguish the game from other board games by emphasising the classical and cultural aspect of the identity.
The project produced a complete board game visual identity, including packaging, playable cards, maps, and manuals.
Warisan Penjelajah’s icon is inspired by the unfolding pages of a book, symbolising learning and discovery. Its interconnected, web-like structure represents reconnection with cultural heritage through play and exploration.
Logo Semiotics
The packaging features photo collage artwork on the cover and adopts a matchbox-style structure, chosen for its familiar, durable, and practical format for board game packaging.

Playable Card Design
Character cards correspond to each player’s physical game pawn and represent the historical figure they choose to play. Each card features the character’s archetype symbol and unique ability, which players can use throughout the game.
Warisan Penjelajah features two playable card types: Challenge Cards (Red) and Artefact Cards (Blue). Together, they support learning and progression, encouraging players to engage with cultural content while collecting the four artefacts needed to win.

Leaflet Design
Warisan Penjelajah includes two manual leaflets: a Red leaflet introducing the game and its components, and a Blue leaflet providing instructions on gameplay and rules.
The game map consists of 160 tiles, each presenting a brief history of the Indonesian Chinese community throughout different periods in the archipelago. The map also incorporates symbols that reinforce exploration and navigation themes, aligning the game experience with the meaning behind its title, Explorer’s Legacy.
